Installing the m8255s.vxd device driver on Windows 9x/ME systems

In Windows 9x/ME operating systems the device driver (m8255s.vxd) of the parallel interface card can be installed from the control panel. Click on the My Computer icon then on the Control Panel icon.

Start the installation by clicking the Add New Hardware icon in the control panel. Follow the steps of the installation wizard as described below:

  1. Instruct Windows NOT to detect the parallel card automatically by pressing the No radio button in the first phase of the installation wizard (Figure 3-6), and then press the Next> button.
  2. Select the Other devices item from the list (Figure 3-7) and press the Next> button.
  3. Press the Have Disk… button. It will results in the Install From Disk window, see Figure 3-8.
  4. Press the Browse… button in order to locate the m8255s.inf file of the Windows 9x device driver that has been copied to your computer by the setup procedure of the T3Ster software. Pressing this button results in a browser window such as shown in Figure 3-9. If the default folder of the T3Ster software setup program was accepted, the Windows 9x device driver of the parallel card should be in the C:\MicReD\T3Ster\driver\w9x folder. After having located the device driver, press the OK button.
  5. The name of the parallel card – MicReD’s 8255s I/O card – should appear in the device list, see Figure 3-10. Select this item and press the Next> button.
  6. As a next step, the default port address setting is shown, see Figure 3-11. The address shown is a suggestion of the wizard in the possible range of port addresses. In most cases this default corresponds to the factory set default 0x300 of the parallel card. If for some reason the value displayed by the wizard is different, change the port address later. Note, that in case of a port address conflict at this step, do not restart your computer until the conflict is resolved by changing the port address as described in Appendix B. In any case, press the Next> button to proceed with the device driver installation wizard.
  7. Press the Finish button to complete the device driver installation wizard (Figure 3-12).
  8. If the port address suggestion of the wizard was different from the value set on the card, check the port address settings of the device driver to see if there is a conflict with other devices: click the System icon in the control panel to display the System Properties window. Select the Device Manager tab and click on the MicReD’s 8255s I/O card item in the list of Other devices. It will result in the MicReD’s 8255s I/O card Properties window, see Figure 3-13. This window serves for finding possible port address conflicts with other devices. If no conflict is indicated, proceed to step 9. In case of a conflict you should chose another port address for the device driver by pressing the Change Settings… key as well as you should change the address setting on the card itself.
  9. Reboot your computer to let the changes take effect.
